Buying Guide

How much material do I need?

Mulch is sold by the cubic yard, and that can leave gardeners scratching their head when trying to figure out how much to buy. Here’s the easiest way:

1. First, find out the size of the area you want to cover in square feet. This is easy; just multiply the length of your garden by the width.

2. Divide the number you get in #1 by one of the following:

  • 160 (for 2″ deep)
  • 106 (for 3″ deep
  • 80 (for 4″ deep)
  • 53 (for 6″ deep)
  • 30 (for 12″ deep)

This is the number of cubic yards of mulch you will need to cover your garden.

In other words…
One cubic yard covers approximately:

  • 160 square feet 2″ deep
  • 106 square feet 3″ deep
  • 80 square feeet 4″ deep
  • 53 square feet 6″ deep
  • 30 square feet 12″ deep
